Perfect Easter Smiles

Name: Jay O'Neill
Story:

The sweet smell of mid-spring flowers drifted through the open window into the cosy attic bedroom. The delightful scent stirred Luna, and she opened her large pale eyes. Blinking around her room, Luna noticed the sound of birds chirping outside. She sat bold upright to see a beautiful baby blue, cloudless sky.

It was the first day of the Easter holidays and yesterday Luna couldn’t wait to get home. However, recently the weather had been so awful that it depressed even her, so today wasn’t a day to be wasted. She hopped out of her colourful stripy duvet and grabbed the clothes that she’d placed carefully next to her bed the night before. Her long blonde hair was sticking out in all directions, but Luna was too eager to enjoy the day ahead to waste time over it.

Down in the kitchen, Luna’s father was making breakfast, wearing an old pink apron around his waist. Luna glided into the kitchen just as he laid a plate of toast, splattered with raspberry jam on the table.

“Good morning, sweetie.” Her father chanted in his jolly tone as she sat down. “We ran out of plum jam so you will have to have raspberry instead, I’m afraid.”

“It’s okay, daddy.” She replied, taking a large bite out of her toast. “Oh, aren’t you having any breakfast?” Luna asked him when he began tidying up.
“No. I’m a bit too busy today, Luna. I don't have the time. I need to finish this month’s edition of The Quibbler otherwise, it’ll never get done. It’s going to print tomorrow.” She was informed.

Just as Luna finished her last slice of toast, she caught sight of something quite small come flying through the window.

“QUICK DAD! It’s a blubbering humdinger! Catch it!” Luna yelled excitedly, jumping out of her seat and following the brown blur zooming around the ceiling. Her father chuckled at her eagerness and removed his apron. “Get it before it flies away!” He encouraged. But just as Luna’s fingertips scrapped the tail of the flying mystery, it flew straight into the window it had come from and bounced off, landing of the kitchen floor. Luna put her hand to her mouth and bent down, scooping up her blubbering humdinger and holding it close. After a second of hugging it, she took a closer look at the creature.

“Hey, this isn’t a blubbering humdinger! It’s Ron’s owl!” Pigwidgeon hooted dizzily in her hands and stuck his tiny leg out. Attached to Pig’s leg was a carefully rolled letter. As she unscrolled the parchment, she recognised Ginny’s handwriting immediately.

Luna,
We’re having a big meal at my house for lunch. I’m allowed to invite a friend, so do you want to come? Harry and Hermione are going to be there too!
Write back quickly!
Ginny

Luna re-read the letter a few times and lit up again. She showed her father the letter and ran upstairs again, carefully nursing Pig in her arms, to reply to Ginny. She placed Pig gently on her bed, and grabbed a scrap piece of parchment and her favourite peacock quill. Luna began to scribble.
When she had finished her short note, Luna looked back to Pig ready to attach it to him. She sighed when she noticed he had fallen asleep. Luna stood up and made her way to the window, looking into the valley below. This is where the town of Ottery St. Catchpole lay. On the other side of the hill, Luna saw an oddly shaped house, obstructed from view of the town by a quiet wood. The Burrow. A grin shot across Luna’s face and she screwed up the parchment in her hand.

“Come on, Pig!” She purred, picking him up and slipping him inside the pocket of her cardigan. “I’ll walk you home.”

The fresh sunshine felt refreshing on Luna’s skin and she admired the beauty of the daffodils sprouting from the grass as she made her way over the hill, past a large oak tree towards The Burrow.
She could hear Pig twittering in her pocket and scooped him out. He looked re-energised and began buzzing around Luna’s head. She giggled and began to run now, with Pig flying after her.
Within minutes, she was standing outside The Burrow, knocking on the front door with Pig rested on her shoulder. Ginny answered and smiled when she saw it was Luna.

“It was a waste of paper replying, I thought I’d just come straight over!” Luna informed her, stepping inside the house and noticing Harry, Ron and Hermione sitting in the living room. She waved with a huge grin plastered on her face and looked around. Mr. and Mrs. Weasley were busy in the kitchen preparing food and Luna presumed the twins were upstairs.

“Come into the garden! We’ll be eating in a minute. Ginny said, catching Pig as he jumped from Luna’s shoulder.

After a three-course meal of the most delicious food Luna thought she’d ever eaten, (minus her father’s cooking, of course!) she placed her spoon beside her half finished bowl of ice cream and took a deep sigh, allowing the warm sun to tickle her nose. Everyone else was now finishing their desert and chattering away as Mrs. Weasley began to clear the table. Today, in Luna’s opinion, couldn’t have been more perfect. Not only had the weather been great and friends had invited her over, but half of the day was still left. She pictured the oak tree that sat on the top of the hill.

One her way home, Luna thought to herself, she’d stop at that tree and admire the view of the town below. She’d admire the fresh green grass, the new year's flowers, and the crystal blue sky. She might even pick some daffodils for her dad.

Luna enjoyed observing the beauty of nature and loved it even more when she was by herself, to peacefully appreciate the perfect Easter smiles that spring had to offer.
