Luna Lovegood

Name: Chloe Sivell
Story:

Luna Lovegood smiled and stepped through the barrier. Sounds of the unknown surrounded her. Bickering, laughing, subdued tears. Everybody seemed to have somebody else with them, someone by their side to nudge and giggle with. She lifted her hand and placed a strand of hair into her mouth. Dad had bought her a new brush for her first year at Hogwarts, one that perfumed the hair as it was used and, if taken far from its case, magically reappeared after 12 hours. His eyes had sparkled with humour when he’d given it to her.

"You can’t lose this one O’ Forgetful Daughter of mine. Not even if you threw it into the Great Lake as a treat to the Giant Squid."

She held the brush in her pocket now and wondered if this Squid was telepathic like others she’d heard of. She’d forgotten to ask her Father this morning in the rush of leaving, then rushing back to collect her forgotten uniform, then leaving again. Now she was about to board The Hogwarts Express and not see him for months.

As the whistle blew, those left on the platform made a mad dash to the train doors, some with determined parents thrusting unwanted items through the windows at them. Luna made her way slowly through the carriages, wanting to take everything in. She’d been waiting for this journey for as long as she could remember. As she came to the end of a corridor, two identical red-haired boys bounded out of a door and jigged past her. As they disappeared though another doorway, one of them grinned and waved at her. Luna waved back with both hands, laughing.

"Hello." an amused voice said.
Luna turned to see a small girl with flaming red hair smiling at her.
"They’re my brothers," she said by way of explanation. "We call them Fred and George."
"Oh. Do they call themselves something different then?" asked Luna, puzzled.
The girl stared and then laughed.
"I’m Ginny Weasley; I’ve been waiting for years to come to Hogwarts."
Luna nodded.
"Me too." She glanced around the small train compartment and, noting nothing of much interest, turned to leave again.
"Wait a minute! What’s your name?" laughed Ginny.
"I’m Luna Lovegood." She smiled at the interest in herself and leant against the doorframe. Ginny frowned. "I think you might live near us, I think I’ve heard my Dad mention your last name before."
"Yes, he probably knows my Father, Dad knows heaps of people." Stated Luna brightly as she fiddled with her hair once more. Ginny nodded and smiled.

As the train continued on its journey, Luna was left alone as a weedy looking youth with the same red hair, a bossy voice, and a pair of horn-rimmed spectacles ushered off Ginny. Ginny had rolled her eyes unhappily, as she was shepherded off, but Luna thought that it might be quite nice to have an older brother. She decided to stay in the train compartment and watch the scenery. The dumpy Tea Lady came along, dutifully passing out various treats to the ravenous hoards that clambered around her well-laden cart.

Hours later as the train was pulling into the station, Luna was disturbed by the arrival of six Hufflepuff girls, all desperate to find an empty compartment in which to change into their uniforms. Luna, who had changed while the train passed through a heavily wooded area, gladly left to stretch her legs.

As the train came to a stop, students swarmed from carriages, pushing and jostling to get a seat in the carriages awaiting them. Luna stopped to admire the winged horses that stood snorting impatiently. They were black, almost reptilian looking, enough to make most people give them a second glance. No one else did however, but Luna knew why; she could see them as a result of witnessing her Mother’s death. Dad had explained it to her, knowing a great deal about Thestrals, though never having seen one himself, much to his regret. Luna had promised to make some notes about them if possible. So now, she stood beside them, writing down a thorough description on a scrap of parchment. The sound of giggling prompted her to glance around. Thestrals didn’t giggle to her knowledge. A group of students was watching her, their amusement showing in the form of loud cackles and hoots. A boy mimicked her, pretending to write furiously while staring at thin air. Then a girl yelled to her.

"You’re meant to be over there you daft First Year! Not pretending to be a ghost hunting reporter!"

Luna turned around and saw a group of younger looking students being herded towards a great lake by a giant of a man. And she saw Ginny Weasley in the midst of them, looking around as if searching for somebody. Luna waved her thanks to the still laughing group, and made her way over.

The boats churned their way through the black water. The First Years whispered excitedly as the castle came closer. Luna concentrated on communicating telepathically with the Giant Squid. Ginny reached over and touched her arm. "Are you sea…um, lake-sick Luna?" Her voice was concerned. Luna shook her head, opened her eyes, and smiled at Ginny. "I’m fine."

Luna Lovegood sat on her blue quilted bed, swinging her legs and letting her toes brush against the cold floor. Four other girls who had become Ravenclaws were down in the buzzing Common Room. Luna thought about her day, especially her Dad’s proud face as he’d hugged her goodbye. She was glad she was in Ravenclaw, like her Mum. The Sorting, which she’d half dreaded, had made her feel proud.

"Lovegood eh…. an unusual mind, but a fine one. There’s courage, ample brains, but your mind may isolate you. Perhaps Ravenclaw….like your parents….I remember….yes, Ravenclaw will do. I see remarkable things ahead, if you stay true to who you are."
